European supermajor Shell has agreed to contract the Constellation semi-submersible drilling rig Alpha Star for a quick intervention programme in the Parque das Conchas field offshore Brazil.

The 30-day charter started on 30 August and will be executed at the same dayrate as the current agreement with Brazilian independent Brava Energia (formerly known as 3R Petroleum).

Brava has the rig on hire until December 2024 and was using the Alpha Star to revitalise operations in the Papa Terra field, where production was recently interrupted after market regulator ANP asked for more information on operational systems.

Shell intends to use the Alpha Star to carry out workover to replace four subsea boosting modules (MOBO) at Parque das Conchas in the Campos basin.

“The Alpha Star will now carry out the substitution of pumping modules for Shell before drilling and completing a well for Brava Energia, who will have the rig until the end of the year,” said Constellation chief executive Rodrigo Ribeiro.

Typically, each MOBO has a lifespan of approximately two years, so Shell has to change them periodically.

Shell operates Parque das Conchas with a 50% stake. The field is currently producing about 29,900 barrels per day of oil and 307,000 cubic metres per day of natural gas.
